Hinduism arrived in Kuala Lumpur along with immigrant labourers from India under the British administration. Although Hinduism has taken root in Peninsular Malaysia much earlier, even before the establishment of the Sultanate of Malacca, Kuala Lumpur was only established in the second half of the 19th century, by which time the predominant religion was Islam. Nonetheless, with the arrival of Hindu Tamils from southern India, there were soon shrines erected to their deities. The most numerous Hindu shrines and temples that you will find in Kuala Lumpur are the Sri Mariamman temples, dedicated to the Hindu mother goddess Amman, who plays the role of protector of the community.
